The Adidas Samba is designed as an indoor soccer shoe. I am a soccer referee, and I wear them when officiating outdoor soccer.

They are comfortable to run in on grass. On roads, however, I'm sure they would be uncomfortable. Their soles have almost no padding, so I would not advise constant running on hard surfaces.

Sambas are fantastic for running. I have two pair and use them exclusively for running. Had the same two pair for almost a decade, they re better than new. Once they get broken in, nothing (I ve found) compares, though you may need a little instruction and practice before they ll work as a great running shoe for you. Here are a few steps to get started:

Step 1: read the book "Born to Run".

Step 2: buy a pair of Sambas.

Step 3: run.

I always have a pair of Samba's around. Its the only shoe that i purchase again once my previous pair is starting to wear. I have used them for indoor Futsal/ Soccer and liked them for those purposes... but do not run in them for purely running and exercise. They are a bit too flat and thin for me to run in them in distances like that. Hope this helps.

It depends on what you are looking for in a running shoe. If you want padding, they are not the best. If you are looking for a minimalist shoe, then I think they are really good.

I played soccer in high school and ran in Sambas then, but they hurt my feet because of the lack of padding and because we ran on the pavement. Now I know that my running form was wrong, and running on pavement is never a good idea.

Now, years later, I started running in my Sambas again. When I run on the pavement, the pounding does still take a bit of a toll, but I have learned to avoid running on pavement as much as possible. I do most of my running on gravel trails, and my Sambas work great for that. I like my Sambas, and will probably buy another pair to continue running in them when the current pair wears out.

I also wear my Sambas to work and when I go out, and never get tired of how they feel. Once they get broken in, it's like wearing a glove.
