OK I am really clumsy, but I am a smart person so I don't know why this happens. Whenever I try to run, this reflex kicks in that makes me hold my breath, until I end up gasping for it about a half minute later. No matter how much I tell myself to breathe, it just doesn't work. How can I train myself to breathe properly while running?

Relax. That's the most important thing. My brother is a running coach and MA. Running all scholastic champion. He told me the most corniest thing but it works. "smell the flowers, blow out the candles." It's corny but it works. Breath in and then out. Don;t worry about running, concentrate on your breathing, not your running. You don't wanna hurt yourself

Ah the sprinters disease. Sprinters tend to hold the oxygen in while they run. Sorry to say it sucks if you go beyond 200 meters.

Get a training buddy and talk. The rule of thumb is this a good pace is one you can talk but not whistle. If you are alone try saying things like the lords prayer or other things that can come into you mind. I use to say our schools fight song to get into a pace as well as forget about my breathing.

Best of luck.

sorry to tell you there really are no tricks, just practice, concentrate more on your breathing, not on how fast you are going, once you can condition your body into running and breathing, itll come second nature and you wont have a problem, so keep working on it!

Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth. I use a chant in my mind with each step. This can be anything, but I use "Bob, Fred" for two steps and breathe in during "Bob, Fred". I use "Ralph, ED" for the third and fourth steps and breathe out during those and then start over again. "Bob, Fred" breathing in through the nose "Ralph, Ed" breathing out through the mouth. "Bob, Fred, Ralph, ED". And focus. Don't let your mind wander. If this is important to you, you can do it.
