Getting the right running shoes is one of the most important things you can do as a runner. In fact, having shoes that don't fit properly is one of the leading causes of leg injuries among runners. Ignore brand names, colors, fancy advertising - none of that matters. The first thing you need to do is find a running store (ie, a store that focuses specifically on runners & running - NOT a big chain sporting goods store) and tell the clerk that you are in the market for your first pair of running shoes and need a fitting. They should measure your foot in several different directions, watch you walk and run both barefoot and in shoes, and have you try on several different types of shoe. (If they don't do this, go somewhere else.) Don't worry about what the shoes look like - go with the ones that feel the best on your feet.

As for the price, you can expect to spend between $100 & $150 on a quality pair. I know it seems like a lot, but wearing the wrong shoes can end up costing much more in doctor and physical therapy bills. Shoes are really the only major expense when it comes to running, though, and having the right pair is incredibly important in terms of injury prevention, so don't skimp, on matter how much you may be tempted. Once you've been fitted and know what type & brand of shoe works the best for you, you can look for sales & bargains when it's time for your next pair.

Finally, be sure wear your shoes ONLY for running and no other activities (the motion involved in non-running activities can cause running shoes to break down faster), and to track how many miles you run in your shoes. Most pairs last around 300 - 500 miles, depending on the runner; after that, the midsoles wear out (even though the outer part of the shoe may look fine) and it's time for another pair.

Best of luck!

The best running shoes are the ones that fit YOUR feet and not my feet. This might sound obvious however many people will look at the brand and model (and looks) and make a decision before they even see if the shoe fits. This includes asking people for advice on running shoes - decision made before they see the trainers. (As an aside - would you buy a house or a car without seeing it?).

Everyone runs in a slightly different way, and are built slightly differently so this means that what fits me well won't necessarily fit you. Most shoe manufacturers make their shoes to a different 'last' or former for the shoe - and that means that each make is slightly differently sized.

So really you have to go to a running shop and try a few pairs on from different manufacturers and see which one fits you well. Get the help of the assistant in the shop (it is what they are there for and if they serve you well then you have a good chance of getting your next pair there - good service really does count).

All the top brands will last you well, approximately 500 miles of running which sounds a lot but it is really three, 3 mile runs a week for a year. I would change my shoes every year (normally in January when the sales are on!!).

If you are just starting to run then I would try the first few runs with trainers that you have in the house before paying for new ones - just to make sure that you can actually run. Then when you have decided that running is for you then go for a new pair.

Just try running barefoot.

Stop looking at shoes as a way to solve the problems of your body. Your body has the potential to function at its best when you don't put shoes on. I have been barefoot (Or close to it) for 5 months now and it has been a great experience.

My muscles in my foot grow stronger and my calves are just exploding with muscle.

I recommend trying out the Nike Frees (3.0 or less. The new ones are like a typical shoe with a large heel) or Vibram Five Fingers. You could even go with racing flats. All these shoes are minimalist and can really help give you proper form and allow your body to run naturally.

So try these things out and don't just go to a store and let Sales Associates, who want to sell that 300+ dollar shoe make a decision.

You make it. Good luck

Getting a good pair of shoes is very important since you plan to start running. As you mentioned there are so many types of running shoes available. In addition there are running shoes for different types of feet like flat feet, feet with normal arches and feet with high arches. Getting the wrong kind of shoes for your foot type can actually cause injuries. My recommendation is to go to a specialty running store where the employees know how to help people choose the right type of shoes. Now is actually a great time to be looking for running shoes as many running stores start running sales in the fall to get rid of of this year's models since running shoe companies will be coming out with new models soon. Also you can read this article "How to Choose the Best Running Shoes by Foot Type" at http://www.suite101.com/content/how-to-choose-the-best-running-shoes-by-foot-type-a270977 to help learn more about choosing the right running shoes.

I know there are many types and colors of running shoes out there, but finding the right shoe might help you to be less prone to injury and wear and tear on your body. To find a good running shoe, go to a running shoe store, get your foot fitted, they usually tell you the best running shoe for your foot. Or google "running shoe finder" and fill out the info, they are usually accurate. If you like the shoes but they are expensive(which good shoes are around $100), try to find last years model online for about half off! Remember to change your running shoes every 350-550 miles.

Hope you find your right one, i know getting last years model helps me save money so i can get more shoes :)

My brother used to run cross-country in highschool, and he always had to have a pair of asics, he said they were the most comfortable shoe he had ever run in, and his coach had always highly recommended him. He still runs recreationally now that he's in the navy, and still loves asics. Hope this helped.
